Play Leela online on your own

Three working ways to play through the game without a facilitator, with an honest account of what each one gives you and what it does not.

Can you play Leela without a facilitator?

Yes. Nothing in the rules requires a second person: you formulate a question, enter the game on a roll of six, and read your own movement across the board. The traditional practice is often solitary.

A facilitator adds attention and structure rather than permission to play. They notice when you have stepped around an uncomfortable square and keep you from rolling past a difficult place. So the real question is not whether you may play alone, but what replaces that function.

Below are the three ways people actually play Leela on their own, and what each one solves.

Three ways to play Leela by yourself

These are not equivalent. The right choice depends on the device you play from and how heavy your question is.

Playing through an AI chat

Free

You give ChatGPT a prompt containing the rules, and it walks you through the squares, asking a question after each move. It works in any browser on any device, including Android and desktop.

Best if
you want to try the practice right now and see whether it resonates
Limitation
the roll is not random, the game is not saved, and there is no visible board

A session with a facilitator

Guided

A person holds the process, notices what you cannot see about yourself, and does not let you step around a difficult square. Many take one guided session first and then continue alone.

Best if
your question touches something raw: a loss, a separation, burnout, a decision you have avoided
Limitation
requires an appointment and costs money

What you need to begin

  1. Formulate your question

You need an open question rather than a closed one. "What stops me from committing to a career change" works; "will things work out" does not, because it has only two possible answers and neither is useful.

  2. Wait for the entry roll

Your piece stays off the board until a six comes up. The tradition holds that the question the game admits you with is the one that genuinely matters right now.

  3. Answer properly

The temptation to rush toward the final square is strong, especially with no facilitator present. This is where the practice usually collapses: single-word answers turn it into a collection of attractive descriptions.

  4. Do not chase the ending

A game can run for hours and does not have to finish in one sitting. Stopping halfway and returning later is normal.

An app for playing Leela

Solo play lives in a separate app, Leela Solo, for iPhone. It carries the board of 72 squares, a die with a genuinely random roll, and a position saved between sessions.

You do not have to install anything just to try the practice: the AI prompt runs in a browser on any device and costs nothing. The app earns its place once the practice becomes regular and you want to continue games rather than restart them.

There is no Android version and no separate browser version for solo play yet. The LeelaRoom web app is built for facilitators running sessions with participants.

Frequently asked questions

Can you play Leela online for free?

Yes. The AI prompt runs in any browser and costs nothing; you only need access to a chat. It comes with limits: the roll is not random, the game is not saved between sessions, and there is no visible board.

Can you play Leela without a facilitator?

Yes, the rules do not forbid it and the traditional practice is often solitary. A facilitator adds attention and structure rather than permission to play: they notice when a player steps around an uncomfortable square.

Is there a Leela app for Android?

There is no Android version of Leela Solo yet; it exists for iPhone only. On Android you can play through the AI prompt directly in a browser.

Can you play Leela in a browser?

There is no separate browser version for solo play yet. The LeelaRoom web app is built for facilitators running sessions. People playing alone in a browser use the AI prompt.

How long does a game of Leela take?

From an hour to several, depending on how closely you examine each square. A game does not have to finish in one sitting; you can break off and return later.

Do you need a special die to play Leela?

No. An ordinary six-sided die works. The app has the roll built in, and when playing through an AI chat you can roll a physical die and report the result.
